AFFECTS TO BRAIN DUE TO COVID-19

Introduction

Brain being one of the most important organ in the body is also not being spared by ill-effects of COVID-19. In a recent research led by Adam Hampshire a doctor at Imperial College London, researchers found out that people recovering from COVID-19 may suffer significant brain function impacts, with the worst cases of the infection linked to mental decline equivalent to the brain ageing by 10 years.

A non-peer-reviewed study of more than 84,000 people, researchers found that in some severe cases, coronavirus infection is linked to substantial cognitive deficits for months.

Effect on Cognitive ability of Brain

Cognitive tests measure how well the brain performs tasks – such as remembering words or joining dots on a puzzle. Such tests are widely used to assess brain performance in diseases like Alzheimer’s, and can also help doctors assess temporary brain impairments.

Adam Hampshire’s team analysed results from 84,285 people who completed a study called the Great British Intelligence Test and found that the cognitive deficits were “of substantial effect size”, particularly among people who had been hospitalised with COVID-19, the researchers said, with the worst cases showing impacts “equivalent to the average 10-year decline in global performance between the ages of 20 to 70”.

Conclusion

As researchers seek to better understand the long term impact of COVID-19, it will be important to further investigate the extent to which cognition is impacted in the weeks and months after the infection, and whether permanent damage to brain function results in some people.

SHARKS TO BE SLAUGHTERED FOR COVID-19 VACCINE

“Human use, population and technology have reached that certain stage where Mother Earth no longer accepts our presence with Silence.”

DALAI LAMA

Introduction

Conservationists have warned that at least 5 lakh sharks are likely to be slaughtered in order to develop enough doses of an effective vaccine and immunise humankind against COVID-19

Why need Shark for Vaccine?

All vaccines consist of an immunological agent called adjuvant—meaning “to help” in Latin—which makes the vaccine more efficient by strengthening its immune response. With the help of adjuvants, vaccines can produce more antibodies, and effectively arm consumers with longer-lasting immunity against the disease. One such Adjuvant is “SQUALENE”.

As per estimates made by conservationists, around 30 lakh sharks are killed every year so that human beings can utilise squalene in cosmetics, machine oil, and other products. British pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline, which has announced mass production of 100 crore doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, has already been using shark squalene to make flu vaccines.

Disaster for Ocean Ecology

Conservationists fear that this sudden spike in demand for mass production of vaccines will not just threaten the shark population, but may eventually lead to their endangerment as well, especially considering these top predators do not reproduce in huge numbers. With top predators gone, it will severely affect the delicate ecology of the oceans.

To protect the shark species, scientists have been actively working on a synthetic version of squalene made from fermented sugar cane. But with such an enormous, urgent, and ever-increasing requirement for vaccines against the novel coronavirus, which has so far infected 3.3 crore and killed 10 lakh people around the world, the number of sharks sacrificed for its production may even exceed the predicted number and continue to soar higher and higher.

Conclusion

Not only sharks other marine animals like Horseshoe Crab is also being targeted for the production of the COVID vaccine. For more info, read article below.

thesocialvigilante.wordpress.com/2020/08/23/important-ingredient-for-covid-19-vaccine-horseshoe-crab-blood/

The measures taken by Governments to contain COVID will have very long term consequences on the environment as well as ecology of the oceans, as around 30-40% of the world population is dependent on Sea food for their livelihoods and as a staple diet.

2020 – YEAR OF SKIRMISHES AND REVOLUTIONS?

INTRODUCTION

The most common misconception which is being spread that Corona Virus treats us equally whether we are rich or poor, but in fact it doesn’t neither on medical front nor economically, socially or psychologically. Everyone these days is bit exited and optimistic about life post this lockdown, a world free from COVID-19. Posts related to “Post Lockdown Shenanigans”, “Post Lockdown trips & parties” are trending over all social media circles from Facebook to Twitter, entire world is hopeful for a better tomorrow. But are we going to see a new dawn or life is going to change forever for many. There are so many questions but only few answers, let’s find out how the world economic bodies or labour organizations foresee the life after lockdown.

Changing World Scenario

The world had become a chaotic place even before the spread of COVID-19, with rising of ISIS to extermination of Rohingyas in Myanmar to violent anti-govt. protests in India against CAA, NPR and Farmers bill.

Since the COVID-19 lockdowns world has been following big protests and skirmishes across the globe:-

  • India-China Border Dispute
  • Black Lives Matter movement in USA and across the World
  • Armenia-Azerbaijan Border Dispute
  • Protests in Hong Kong against Chinese Govt.
  • Protests in Thailand against Monarchy
  • Protests against Govt. in Belarus
  • Protests against Govt. in Israel
  • Protests by Farmers in India
  • Protests by Climate Change NGO’s in Germany against use of Fossil fuel
  • And there are many more going on in different parts of Africa, Asia and Western World

According to a count, there have been 100 large anti-govt. protests across the globe since 2017, from the Gilets Jaunes riots in a developed nation like France to demonstration against strongmen in poor countries such as Sudan, Bolivia to fighting against alleged rights for citizenship in developing country like India leading to heavy casualties. About 20 of these uprisings toppled leaders, while several others were brutally crushed and some were intervened by COVID-19, simmering until the next opportune moment post lockdown.

Predicted Economic Aftermath

The International Labour Organization has warned that this pandemic will destroy 195 million jobs worldwide and will drastically bring down the income of around 1.25 billion people of which mostly belong to low income category.

Large reduction in labour force are foreseen in the Arab states(8.1% equivalent to 5 million full-time workers), Europe(7.8% or 12 million full time workers) and Asia & Pacific(7.2% or 125 million full time workers).

Huge losses are expected across the globe within different income groups but especially in upper middle income countries(7.0%, 100 million full time workers), far exceeding the effects of the 2008-2009 global recession. More than 04 out of 05 people (81%) in the global workforce of 3.3 billion are currently affected by full or partial workplace closures.

Conclusion

People across the globe have lost their dear ones, jobs, homes and now even struggling for one time meal. With lockdown measures, rise in frustration and hunger of people, the world may have to pay a very heavy economic and social price for this pandemic. After the COVID-19 subsides, it will be interesting to note what economic measures will be taken by govt. with all their economic wells already dried up.

Many predict that this boiling pressure and exasperation will give rise to revolutions across the globe with dire consequences. The test of leadership lies ahead in front of the governments. After all one of the leader said –

“We know how to bring the economy back to life. What we do not know is how to bring people back to life.”

President Akufo-Addo

Is it right time to open Schools/ Educational Institutions?

Introduction

The pandemic has deeply affected the education system across the globe. According to UN chief around 1 Billion students have been affected by these sudden school closures. The only question which looms in everyone’s mind is as to when these institutions would be allowed to function. As E-studies and virtual classrooms is not the cup of tea for many due to various technological and social barriers. Amid this, American President is pushing to open schools in the country. I think America should learn lessons from Israel Govt. and revaluate the condition before taking any such rash decisions.

COVID-19 spread in Israeli Schools

When the COVID-19 cases subsided to its minimum levels, Israel Govt. opened the schools in late May. Within days, infections were reported at a Jerusalem High School, which quickly mushroomed into the largest outbreak in a single school infecting many students, teachers and workers.

This outbreak forced hundreds of schools to close again and Israel govt. has only one advice for other countries.

“They definitely should not do, what we have done”

ELI WAXMAN (Chairman of team advising Israel’s National Security Council on the Pandemic)

Conclusion

Governments should prepare viable plans before taking such decisions, as children below 10 yrs of age are the most susceptible to the virus and its effects.

Schools should be opened in phased manner, with priority to High Schools as it has students ranging age above 14 yrs age group who have better immunity and their career building stage has started, so it’s important for them to resume their studies as soon as possible.

GLOBAL FOOD WASTE – A RISING CONCERN?

“For some a SNACK, for some a Day’s MEAL”

Introduction

COVID-19 crisis has wreaked havoc in different parts of the world and the likely 2nd wave of the virus has hit many countries like Australia, South Korea, Spain etc. The Emergency Committee on COVID-19, convened by the WHO Director General under the International Health Regulations 2005(IHR) held its fourth meeting on 31th July and highlighted the anticipated lengthy duration of the pandemic.

“This Pandemic is a once in a century health crisis, the effects of which will be felt for decades to come.” – Dr. Tedros

Many have lost their jobs, industries have been shut down and some sectors like Tourism have completely diminished from the current scenario leading to rise in World Hunger and malnutrition.

Facts related to Food Waste

According to FAO data, over 1/3rd of all the food produced globally goes to waste and the value of this wasted food comes to about $1 trillion, weighs about 1.3 billion tonnes.

All the world’s nearly one billion hungry people could be fed on less than a quarter of the food that is wasted in US, UK and Europe alone. This failed global food system is putting immense pressure on our planet ecology also.

Environmental Cost of 01 Meal

Whether eaten or thrown out, to deliver one meal to one person requires:-

10 kgs of topsoil

1.3 ltrs of diesel

800 ltrs of water

0.3 gms of pesticide

3.5 kg of CO2 emissions

Multiply this figure with 03 meals a day for 08 billion people and you will get the gigantic total. This process has led to loss of 1/3rd of the world’s soil is past 40 years and in next 40 years we will need to produce more food than produced in the world in past 8000 years.

Growing Hunger and Malnutrition

After production of food on such biblical scale, world hunger index is increasing in many countries. According to UN reports around 821 million people worldwide do not have enough of the food they need to live an active and healthy life. One in nine goes to bed hungry each night.

In developing countries and poor countries, matters are even worse. India one of the most developing nation, the number of hungry people have increased by 65 million which is more than population of France. According to survey by an NGO called “Bhook” in 2013, 200 million Indians sleep hungry on any given night and around 07 million children die every year due to malnutrition.

Conclusion

Hunger continues to strike at the core of the humanity during this pandemic and with serious economic concerns, the problem intensifies even more.

Sustainable food consumption techniques need to be implemented from the grass root levels. In many European countries, people keep the leftovers or extra food in the freezers which can be taken by the needy or poor people which is a great initiative and others need to follow. The waste food could also be converted into Compost and can be used for plants and in kitchen gardens.

Many NGO’s also work in the direction of educating the masses about the effects of food wastage and such drives need to be supported by local communities and administration.

Is World History going to Change Forever?

In my previous blogs, I mentioned there will come a day when a Drug Peddler/Thief will be instituted as a World Leader or Mahatma all owing to “Black Lives Matter”.

Statue of a protester has been uncovered, it’s just a matter of time when we will see Mahatma’s George Floyd statue in one of the counties.

Anarchy is that, no one is talking about the root cause of 65000 positive COVID-19 cases which are emerging in US on daily basis now, all thanks to Great Protests.

BLACK SWAN EVENTS

Introduction

While reading different articles online, I came across an interesting read titled “Black Swan Events.” These events are those events which are neither anticipated, neither being prepared for but their impact is such that it changes the Economy, Demography, and Sociology of the world.

Black Swan Event

The term Black Swan originates from the (Western) belief that all swans are white because these were the only ones accounted for. However, in 1697 the Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh discovered black swans in Australia. This was an unexpected event in (scientific) history and profoundly changed zoology.

The term came to light in Modern Day world through Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a finance professor, writer, and former Wall Street trader. Taleb wrote about the idea of a BLACK SWAN event in a 2007 book prior to the events of the 2008 financial crisis. Taleb argued that because black swan events are impossible to predict due to their extreme rarity yet have catastrophic consequences, it is important for people to always assume a black swan event is a possibility, whatever it may be, and to plan accordingly.

The Black Swan Event have these common characteristics :-

  •  It is beyond normal expectations that is so rare that even the possibility that it might occur is unknown.
  • It has a catastrophic impact when it does occur.
  • It is explained in hindsight as if it were actually predictable.

Past Black Swan Events

The financial crash of the U.S. housing market during the 2008 crisis is one of the most recent and well-known black swan events. The effect of the crash was catastrophic and global, and only a few outliers were able to predict it happening.

Also in 2008, Zimbabwe had the worst case of hyperinflation in the 21st century with a peak inflation rate of more than 79.6 billion%. An inflation level of that amount is nearly impossible to predict and can easily ruin a country financially.

Is COVID-19 a Black Swan Event?

There have been many arguments in favour and against this motion. Experts say, as the Pandemics keep occurring in the world from Spanish Flu to SARS to H1N1 and governments have been preparing contingency plans and SOPs for crisis like these so it cannot be considered as a Black Swan Event.

I consider it as a Black Swan Event as half the 2020 has already passed and world agencies are till not able to determine the economic and social losses this pandemic has caused. The losses in terms of economy are biblical and human death rate is also increasing day by day as one of the world’s most populated country “India” is slowly slipping into the grip of COVID-19. Only future may tell the exact losses to the entire human ecosystem.

RISING COVID-19 CASES IN USA

“ONE FOOL MAKES MANY”

I wrote an article few days back – “Are we one Bad Day away from becoming the Joker” based on Nihilism. To get more insight into Nihilism, read the article below.

thesocialvigilante.wordpress.com/2020/04/03/are-we-one-bad-day-away-from-becoming-the-joker/

I thought “Black Lives Matter” was the end of the madness which is resulting in daily 50,000 positive COVID-19 cases in America, but I was mistaken and underestimated the strength and will of Americans.

Then came the news which i coudn’t believe “Some young people in Alabama are throwing Covid-19 parties a disturbing competition where people who have coronavirus attend and the first person to get infected receives a payout, local officials said.”

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/07/02/us/alabama-coronavirus-parties-trnd/index.html

I guess this is the Final Nail in the Coffin, such fools will lead to annihilation of the entire Human race like how the Americans are suffering for their foolishness of propagandizing “Black Lives Matter.”

INCREASING COVID-19 CASES IN USA

Introduction

Few days back just after the death of “George Floyd” I wrote an article about how these violent and massive protests will act as unguided missiles which would only help in spreading COVID-19. Read the article below.

https://thesocialvigilante.wordpress.com/2020/06/02/one-bad-day-which-turned-americans-into-joker/

New Peak of COVID-19 in USA

Last three days have broken all the records for USA. The cases had come down to 20-25K per day has reached to all time high of 44,000 per day and the hypocrites are blaming it on administration, rather than blaming illogical and rampant “Black Lives Matter” protests which laughed upon the face of COVID-19 and now paying the heavy price.

There’s one very LOGICAL announcement which Airhostess make before the take off – “In case of air pressure drop in cabin, first help yourself and then help others with the mask.” I guess AMERICA is going to learn this a HARD WAY.
